How Much Sleep Do You Actually Need?
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours per night — but sleep needs shift considerably across the lifespan. Here is what the CDC recommends:

Understanding Your Sleep Cycles
Sleep is not one continuous state. Your brain cycles through distinct stages throughout the night — each one doing something different and essential.

NREM Sleep (Stages 1–3) Stage 1 is the lightest stage — a brief transition between wakefulness and sleep, lasting just 5–10 minutes. If woken here, people often feel they were not really asleep. Stage 2 is where you spend about 50% of your total sleep time. Heart rate slows, body temperature drops, and the brain begins producing sleep spindles — bursts of activity that protect sleep. Stage 3 is deep, slow-wave sleep. Muscles relax completely. Blood pressure drops. This is the most physically restorative stage — where the body repairs tissue, strengthens immunity, and consolidates physical recovery. | REM Sleep REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is where the brain becomes highly active while the body remains relaxed. The Hormones Running Your Sleep

What Is Insomnia — and What Causes It?
Insomnia is not simply having a bad night. It is a pattern of difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early — and it affects your ability to function the next day.

About 75% of people with insomnia can identify a triggering event — health issues, stress, loss, or relationship difficulties. But what often keeps insomnia going long after the trigger has passed is the pattern of habits that builds up around it: staying in bed too long, clock-watching, trying harder to sleep. These strategies backfire.

Sleep Hygiene: The Foundation of Better Sleep
Sleep hygiene refers to the habits, routines, and environment that either support or undermine your sleep. According to the Sleep Foundation, good sleep hygiene is one of the most impactful and low-risk things you can do to improve your rest.
It comes down to four areas:

1. Your Schedule
A consistent sleep schedule is the single most important sleep hygiene habit. Going to bed and waking up at the same time — even on weekends — keeps your circadian rhythm anchored. Harvard Health notes that a regular schedule is essential to helping the brain and body get the full amount of sleep they need.
• Set a fixed wake time and work backwards from it
• Avoid naps longer than 30 minutes, and not after 3:00 pm
• If you are not sleepy, delay bedtime rather than lying awake frustrated
2. Your Bedtime Routine
Your brain is not a light switch. You cannot go full speed until 10 pm and expect to fall asleep peacefully by 10:30. Reserve at least 30–60 minutes to wind down.
• Put away electronic devices — screens emit blue light that suppresses melatonin
• Try light reading, gentle stretching, or a warm bath
• Practice breathing exercises — the 4-7-8 method (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) is a simple and effective option
• Dim the lights in your home as bedtime approaches
3. Your Daytime Habits
What you do during the day shapes how well you sleep that night.
• Avoid caffeine after noon — it has a half-life of 5–6 hours and can still be active in your system at bedtime
• Limit alcohol — it may help you fall asleep but disrupts the second half of the night, reducing deep and REM sleep
• Avoid nicotine, which is a stimulant and disrupts sleep architecture
• Exercise regularly — even a 30-minute walk can measurably improve sleep quality
• Get natural light exposure during the day, especially in the morning — this anchors your circadian rhythm
4. Your Sleep Environment
Your bedroom environment sends signals to your brain about whether it is time to sleep. According to both Harvard Health and the Sleep Foundation, the ideal bedroom is:

The Most Effective Treatment: CBT-I
If sleep hygiene alone hasn't solved the problem, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the most evidence-backed treatment available — and it outperforms sleep medication over the long term.
CBT-I works by addressing the thought patterns and habits that perpetuate insomnia. It typically includes:

When to Seek Professional Help
