Welcome

At the core of my treatment philosophy is the belief that individuals and families heal when movement occurs, and people begin to step out of their comfort zones to unlock their potential and capacity for growth.  Often there is underlying pain or trauma that needs to be addressed in order for the system to recover and break the cycle where one may be stuck.  Whether the root of the dysfunction is abuse, addiction, estrangement, divorce, suicide, broken communication paths, or some other maladaptive coping strategy, treatment can provide relief.

Therapist and Family Consultant

Richard began assisting families in 1999, teaching middle school.  He then worked at a therapeutic wilderness program followed by mental health programs where he provided crisis intervention, case management, and counseling for individuals and families.  Seeing the multiple needs of the families he served, he decided to pursue other avenues to help and went back to school to enhance his skills and abilities.  His experience within this field increasingly adds value to the therapeutic and consulting process and encourages others to work harder to meet a family's cultural, spiritual, emotional and other unique needs.

As a consultant:

When seeking treatment programs for mental health or addiction issues, the choices can seem overwhelming and daunting.  With nearly 20 years of experience in the field, BIFS can help you to navigate the complexities of seeking out the help you or your family may need.

Where can individuals and their families turn to for expert advice?  To recommend the best programs for you, BIFS relies on experience working in a wide range of therapeutic settings including wilderness programs, substance abuse treatment facilities, hospitals, academia, the military, community-based programs, and as a clinical liaison to the courts and school system.

Richard balances his work life by kayaking, swimming, cooking, traveling, reading, home improvement projects and playing with his children.  Richard has traveled extensively and is passionate about learning about other cultures.
